What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda meaning science of life, is an ancient and holistic system of medicine widely practiced in India for thousands of years. It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people live healthy and long life. The focus of this system of medicine is that prevention is better than the cure. In Ayurveda you learn why diseases occur and what you can do to prevent and cure them.

According to Ayurveda, every person is made of five elements

Space,  Air, Fire,  Water and  Earth

These five basic elements   combine into three constitutions called doshas:

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

  • Vata. (space and air) Energy that controls bodily functions associated with motion, including blood circulation, breathing, blinking, and heartbeat. When vata energy is balanced, there is creativity and vitality. Out of balance, vata leads to joint pain, constipation, dry skin, anxiety and other ailments.
  • Pitta. (fire and water) Energy that controls the body's metabolic systems, including digestion, absorption, nutrition, and temperature. In balance, pitta leads to contentment and intelligence. Out of balance, pitta can cause ulcers ulcers, inflammation, digestive problems, anger, heartburn and arthritis.
  • Kapha.(water and earth). Energy that controls growth in the body. It supplies water to all body parts, moisturizes the skin, and maintains the immune system. In balance, kapha is expressed as calm and gentle disposition. Out of balance, kapha leads to obesity, diabetes, sinus problems, insecurity and gallbladder and related ailments.

These Doshas control how the body works. Everyone inherits a unique mix of the three doshas but usually one or two doshas are more dominant. One should know what is one’s dosha (constitution). By understanding one’s dosha, one can make optimal choices about diet, exercise, supplements, and all other aspects of the lifestyle accordingly. Any imbalance in doshas manifests in the body as disease. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on rebalancing the doshas.

The Ayurvedic practitioner will advise the ways to restore your natural dosha balance, though herbal therapies, herbal remedies and changes in lifestyle, especially diet.
